Are you supposed to be per scribed a antibiotic after a root canal??
Question: I had a root canal last week and am returning today to get the permenet filling and was not givin a antibiotc and my tooth is pounding with pain.Im not sure if I should ask for them or not.
Answers: If there is an infection, you will need antibiotics. If there is no infection, then you don't. I would ask for pain killers if you are experiencing pain.
I have had seveal and can't remeber having anitbiotics. But the pain isn't normal.
A person wouldn't normally be prescribed antibiotic following a root canal, unless the dentist discovered some evidence of infection as he was cleaning the canals. I don't recall any of my root canals hurting that much afterwards, except the area being a bit sore when the anesthetic wore off. The dentist will often prescribe some pain killer in case the patient gets discomfort, but if the area is hurting you that bad, do the sensible thing, call the dentist's office and tell them. They may have you come in so the dentist can take a look at it.
It depends how big a job it was. I've had root-canal treatment on two teeth; the first time I needed a course of antibiotics (before treatment - not after)but not the second time. You should have been advised to tell your dentist if you had any inflammation. Some inflammation for the first week is normal but you shouldn't be in pain. Definitely contact your dentist and ask for a prescription.
I just had a rot canal and was prescribed antibiotics and pain killers. There was obviously an infection that is why they prescribed the antibiotics.
You will definitely want to tell your dentist about the pain. I had pain a couple days following mine and they discovered they hadn't gotten the canal 100% cleaned out. The pain was the worst I've ever felt in my life! You want them to get it cleaned out or the problem solved before they close it up for good.
From what I know, you shouldn't have PAIN, just tenderness after a root canal
