If a filling is cracked, can you get a new filling??
Question: I have a filling that is cracked, I would would like to know if it is necessary that I have a crown or caps done or if a a new filling can replace the old filling?
Answers: I have had fillings drilled out and replaced. An x-ray should be done to make sure the cavity or another cavity has not formed anywhere in that tooth. Cap or crown? I spent thousands on porcelain crowns and partials and when I moved and got a new dentist, he started bonding my broken or chipped teeth. Not one of the others had ever mentioned this and I was paying $700+ per visit. My teeth look great and he said depending on how rough I am on them they should last a lifetime. Less than $150 per visit and about the same number of visits. IF you need crowns ask about bonding. It's fast and I ate an apple the same night with my new front teeth!
You probably won't need anything over the filling though.
Compare prices and ask what is available and what is the difference in techniques. Sounds like you might just need a simple refill.
Good luck! Open your mouth for more than the work on your teeth. Ask for a range of suggestions!
If the filling is cracked, it must first be drilled out and replaced before any further work can be done. You need a firm foundation just like building a house.
Your dentist will excavate and replace.
your dentist should replace that...if you haven't had it long it should cost you
Sometimes a new filling can be done. I will depend on the size of the cavity and if the tooth structure is sound. Call your dentist for an appt...
You can but if you go to the dentist they might tell you the same thing they did me
to save time and money go to wal-mart or another well know store and get denture or crown repair kit.It come with some type of glue you put in your tooth that can put your cap, crown or filling back in place, and fill it if it's cracked.
They will have to remove your old filling and replace it. I've had that happen myself and it's not bad. My dentist has said that I need to get a crown and I was about to do it and then one day in his office I heard him telling someone that he convinced someone else to get a crown. So, make sure that nothing else can be done before getting a crown.
Firstly it should be determined WHY the old filling failed.
Sometimes it might be that the original preparation for the old filling was too shallow, in which case it will be deepened.
Sometimes it might be that the old filling needs some reinforcement, like dentinal pins.
Sometimes it might be the type of material used - composites are weaker than amalgams.
If after looking at all these factors it is determined that there is just too much stress for the capacity of the filling to withstand the forces, then a crown might be necessary.
