Best way to reduce tooth & gum pain???

Question: What is the best way to reduce pain in gums & teeth during orthodontic procedures?? I've got a spring-loaded clip (retainer) and honestly, I don't recall my braces hurting this bad (lol- I'm just getting old).

I have incredibly sensitive teeth, so sucking on ice seems like a poor idea.
Do you know of any around the house remedies?
What's the best store brand product for numbing, aside from pain medication in pill form?
Answers: The dentist I used to work for recommended applying sensitive toothpaste (such as sensodyne or colgate sensitive) to the teeth and leaving it on there for a few minutes. Also, substitute your normal toothpaste for a sensitive one.
Also avoid giving your teeth a shock by going from very hot liquids or foods to very cold as it can cause small cracks in the enamel which can enhance sensitivity.
I hope this helps, I'm sorry there is no quick solution.
Rum & coke.
I agree with Mira. Also Extra strength Excedrine works the best thats if you are not allergic to Aspirin. Wish you luck in good healing.
