Laughing gas??
Question: i'm a control freak. i don't even like being drunk. i'm scared i won't be able to control the situation. how long does it last? can you drive afterwards? and what does it feel like? i'm so scared! im just as scared about the laughing gas as the needles and drillin!
Answers: If you were my patient, I'd probably suspect you won't like the Nitrous oxide (aka laughing gas). it DOES feel like having a couple beers... sort of laid back. However, you can ask the dentist to titrate (that is adjust) the level you're getting, just like you noodle w/ the hot and cold taps before you get in the shower so it's just right!
you can try it out for a couple minutes, see how you feel, and if you don't like it the doc can turn it off and you're back to normal in SECONDS.
There is no hang over so you can feel normal again fast. As for driving, you couldn't get to your car FAST enough to have an effect; it wears off that quickly!
As for how it feels, it's an anxiolytic so it doesnt' decrease pain at all, it just makes you CARE less! I personally enjoy the feeling, but it's not a good idea for me to toke on gas for obvious reasons. Also, it doesn't feel like whippits so if you or anyone has had these, it's like the difference between riding a bull and riding a bicycle. the bike (and nitrous at dentist) is smoother and nicer. :D Basically, reality will get a little fuzzy on the edges, you'll feel warm and cozy, maybe a little sleepy. you won't fall asleep. you MAY experience a slight hallucinatory effect, but you can either ride that dragon or just ask doc to turn it down a notch.
Also, it's perfectly safe. you can't OD on the stuff (well, you can..if you get WAY too much there's nausea, but you'd feel uncomfortable long before that, so don't worry).
Hope this helps! good luck. this is a much better alternative than taking a pill (Valium, halcyon, etc) because once you swallow that you're committed; you can't adjust while w/ gas the doc and adjust as you go.
Ususally it is relaxing and wears off in about 15 minutes or less, effects are minmal as far as anesthesia goes.
It can affect people differently.
You'll just feel relaxed for as long as the operation lasts and for 15 minutes afterwards. Nothing to be worried about. You keep your control.
It's great stuff! If your doctor gives it to you to relax you, he will turn off the gas and just let you breathe oxygen for a few minutes to get the gas out of your system. It only takes a few minutes and its gone.
nitrous has different effects on different people. some love it and some become ill from using it. make sure the dentist/hygenist has it on a low setting at first so you can tell if you'll like it or not. it usually lasts for a bout 15 minutes following procedure but you are flushed out with pure oxygen and will be FINE to drive.
