What is Xylitol??
Question: I saw this on a few sugar free gums. Is it a warning or is it something good for you?
Answers: The safe-natural sweetener
Fight Cavities with all-natural xylitol. Safe for diabetics.
Xylitol sugar Crystals or Xylitol Sugar, sometimes called Birch Sugar is a natural sweetener clinically proven to fight cavities, reduce plaque, and is used by dental and medical professionals worldwide.
USAGE NOTES: Use xylitol sugar crystals one-to-one as sugar in your recipes. Xylitol dissolves quickly, mixes easily, and is heat stable for cooking, baking and hot drinks. These granules are wonderful sprinkled over cereal, salads and in sauces.
Initial overuse can have a laxative effect with some people. If you have never used xylitol sugar before, start slow, allow your system to adjust to higher quantities. (By doing this you are increasing the necessary enzymes in your stomach to digest xylitol.) It is easiest to begin with the dental recommendation of a 5-15 gram serving (1 tsp = 4 grams), with 100 grams daily in divided servings of 20-35-g soon accepted without any trouble. Much higher amounts are easily accepted by most people. The FDA has ruled xylitol sugar SAFE in any amount. Xylitol crystals can be used as part of a diabetic diet. (Diabetics see note below.)
