Fillings Material Left in Gums??
Question: Just curious if a tiny bit of filling material left in the gum could cause discomfort in surrounding teeth. If you see my last question, I ask about how long it takes for antibiotics to take effect... because I had a root canal on Dec 11th, and have since been on 2 rounds of antibiotics; first Penacillin and then Amoxicillin... but everytime I am finished taking the antibiotics, the pain returns. This is not a throbbing pain but a dull aching discomfort in my jaw. I am guessing I still have infection. I am looking at my xray and notice a tiny bit of filling outside the tip of the root,... so is it possible that it could cause discomfort?
Answers: ACTUALLY, a little bit of material coming out of the tip of the root is often just some spare sealer... endodontists call this a puff and it's considered favorable...it means that the canal is totally full of sealer.
now a TON of materal coming out the end (more than 1 to 1.5 millimeters) indicates a less-than-ideal result. HOwever, if they're GIVING you the xray, they're probably pretty good (you don't show off if there's a mistake!)....
However, despite everyone's best efforts, sometimes rootcanals need to be re-treated. dull aching for a few weeks is normal, but if you get throbbing again, it's def time to go back!
my only raised eyebrow on the whole thing is.... did they REALLY go from Penicillin to Amoxicillin (was the 2nd perhaps Augmentin, which is Amox w/ Clavulonic acid??) cuz Pcn. and Amox are almost the same - it's like if you don't like your Corolla at ALL and you get a Camry - you're still driving a Toyota sedan. I'd go from Pcn to Augmentin or to Flagyl (metronidazole) or Clindamycin (cleocin) or even zithromax or something...
but that's just a judgement call; i don't mean to imply that was a bad decision. just not mine. :)
let me know if you have any further elaborations or questions!
Yes it could cause pain. It is important that you go back to the dentist quickly. These pieces of matter could cause serious infections in your mouth. There is no shame in asking your dentist questions or expressing your concerns, that's his job.
So please go back to him/her and have him/her take a look at your mouth.
