Clicking Jaw??

Question: Whenever I chew gum, my jaw clicks and I heard that it is very dangerous and can lead to you not being able to open your mouth. True or false?
Answers: it's not dangerous. it sounds like you have mild TMJ. does your jaw hurt? especially when you wake up? it's kind of like arthritis, it's in the jaw. there are a lot of ways to treat it, from acupuncture to a mouth guard worn at night. next time you go to the dentist, ask her or him to check, tell them about the clicking.

the 'it's dangerous and can lead to not being able to open your mouth' is like the whole 'if you crack your joints you'll get arthritis' ... old wive's tale.

i would recommend getting it checked out by your dentist, they'll know whether you need to get it treated.
gonna second abiona! i have the same thing and it's TMJ related. i will admit, after a number of years I finally gave in and got the bite gaurd. this is due to the stress of my job and the TMJ combined -- it's not a pretty sleeping picture- jaw would lock mid grind!
as for not b eing able to open your mouth -- not unless that gum you're chewing hardens too much ; )
No! Look up TMJ online. My mother has had it for 40 years. It is not dangerous, just annoying.
