How do I avoid dry sockets??
Question: I just had 4 wisdom teeth pulled this morning. It feels fine except now I'm afraid of getting dry sockets. I know you're not supposed to use straws or anything. What else can I do to avoid getting a dry socket?
Answers: No straws and certainly no smoking. I found it helpful to keep cotton pads in while I was eating to avoid infecting the sites. Also try not to play with the sites with your tongue and no rinsing (including mouthwash) for the first 24-48. Basically you want to give your mouth enough time to create scabs to stop the bleeding and to help fight infection.
Don't smoke, don't chew food back there (stick to liquids the first 36 hours or so), leave the gauze pads in as long as there's oozing, and be very careful not to dislodge the clots when you DO remove the gauze.
i would like to add that you should not spit, this can make bleeding continue or pull the clot out
also, do not brush with a whitening toothpaste, it contains
peroxide and will make sutures dissolve prematurely
no straws; no sucking; if you rinse your mouth with warm salt water, just swish the water around very gently; just be very careful. Even if you follow your dentist/doctor's instructions, sometimes one just cannot avoid dry sockets, no matter what. Trying not to scare you or anything. I followed the oral surgeon's instructions and still ended up with dry sockets, which sucked.
