Why is my tongue hurting??

Question: The back part of my tongue to the right has been aching me for about 3 days now. I checked it and it is sort of red an a tad bit swollen. I now that it is not my tooth, and no, it is not herpes. You can only get that on the outside of your mouth. So stop with the stupid answers already. Is there any suggestions of what it could be and anything I could put on it. I have a dentist appt. Monday for x-rays and I really want it to go away by then.
Answers: You are describing an area of the tongue known as the lingual tonsil or follate papillae ( these names are sometimes used interchangeably). It is lymphoid tissue on the back, sides of the tongue. These can get inflamed when your body is fighting some kind of infection. Warm salt water rinse and 2 to 3 tablets of advil every 4 to 6 hours will get you through it. This will generally heal on its own
what did you put in that hurt you like that
Is is a canker sore? You may want to go to your regular doctor if it continues to hurt.
it is *possible* that you chew on your tongue in your sleep. my sister has epilepsy and sometimes wakes up with a swollen/sore tongue (in the back, isolated to one side or the other) because she has chewed on it overnight. you might want to ask your doctor about getting a sleep-deprived EEG...
Sometimes eating chips can place scrapes inside of your mouth or possibly something you ate that was too hot..???
It is very to diagnose your ailment without seeing it and having knowledge. You should be seen by a physician or at least a PA to get a better assessment. Good luck
have you been doing things you shouldnt have been doing
no actually you can get a form of the herpes virus inside the mouth, but it probably is not the case with you. You probably bit yourself and didnt know it or you burnt yourself. its not a canker sore because you dont get those on your tongue.
umm u may of have bitten ur self or burnt ur self.
The best person to tell you is the dentist as they are trained to inspect peoples mouths and it is due to them that cancers are picked up on routine inspections I would like to take this opportunity to thank all these dentists out there for doing this
