Weight gain at start of diet??

Question: I started a permanent diet about 4 days ago. I've managed to keep my calorie intake to between 1200-1600 calories a day. I have probably cut my calories in half! The day I started this change, I weighed 205 lbs. I weighed myself today and am up to 211! I haven't yet begun exercising on a regular basis. I have also upped my water intake to 8 glasses a day. I have had practically no salt. I've been eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc, nothing sugary or fried or anything.

So does anyone know why I would gain 6 pounds in such a short period of time? Is it possible to gain that much water weight in 4 days? I'm trying very hard not to get discouraged and to stick with it, but 6 pounds seems like a huge setback when I'm supposed to lose 2 pounds a week.

Any explanations or advice would be appreciated,

If you have sources, please list them. I'll give you credit for directing me to good information. Don't cut and paste entire websites.
Answers: It's possible it could be water weight gain. I also retained alot of fluid at first but dont let it discourage you. At the beginning of March 2006 I weighed 242 pounds. I changed my eating habits, drank more water and lessened my calories to 1200-1400 per day. I really don't think that my calorie intake was that much. I ate and still do eat oatmeal every morning and would have a Healthy Choice or Smart Choice dinner for lunch and sometimes dinner. I ate fruit in the beginning but not as much. I am hardly hungry in the evenings. I rarely eat fast food but the cravings are still there. As of today I weigh 217 and still dropping weight. I have went from a size 20 to a 16. I think that once I add exercise to my daily activities I will drop weight and tone up at the same time. Once you truly set your mind to it you can do it. Try not to think of it as being on a diet, but as a daily routine. I have tried almost every diet pill and diet plan out there. Sure I lost weight but gained the weight back and more.

Just as I took the time to eat and gain the weight I will take the time to lose it is how I look at it. I want to wish you luck!!
Water retention. Start some exercise and the numbers should start to go down again. Don't give up, I wish you the best of luck and health. Stick with it.
Sorry I have no links for you but I hope I've helped.
i think i know your prob . You don't gain weight from calories the day you eat em .It takes a weak or two .The weight gain you're experiencing is probably because of excessive calorie intake before you started your diet .Keep it up ! And for the first week you just might want to eat a little less and exersise a little more .
If you are lifting weights your weight gain could be a result of gaining muscle. Also you could be retaining water a third more popular but less likely option is that your metabolism dropped.
